Office Phones are Pain in the Neck!
An office worker can spend anything from 25 to 40 hours a week in a static position working at a computer. Back pain and stiff neck are one of the most common work related health problems, yet it can be easily prevented by ensuring that your working environment is back friendly.
Research from The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy shows that an increasing number of people are suffering from a form of repetitive strain injury, commonly known as ‘phone-neck’, Phone Neck is caused by the user putting their phone in between their head and shoulder, thus putting undue strain on their neck. Office workers and heavy phone users are most at risk.
Surrey University's Health Sciences department discovered that:-
- 50% of office workers suffered from neck pain
- 31% suffered from lower back pain
- 65% of participants suffered from headaches sometimes or frequently
Advice for Phone Users
- Ensure you have a good, adjustable office chair which provides support for your lower back
- Alter the height of your chair so that your hands are level with your computer keyboard
- Locate your computer screen and keyboard directly in front of you so that your screen is level with your eyes
- Rest your wrists at the front of your desk, just in front of your keyboard. Alternatively, consider using a wrist support.
- Use a telephone headset, especially if you need to use your keyboard whilst on the phone
- Ensure there is plenty of space on your desk
- Take frequent breaks away from your desk. Walking reduces the risk of back & neck pain, as well as heart disease and stress
- Try standing up for phone calls that don't require you to use the computer
- Wireless Headsets allow you to move away from your desk whilst talking on the phone
Headset Benefits
The benefits of using a Headset are numerous, flexibility, comfort, freedom, mobility, productivity etc. However, perhaps the most beneficial reason are the health benefits. Using a telephone headset helps to develop correct posture, which in turn helps to reduce neck, shoulder and back pain. Phone-Neck is caused by resting the phone on the shoulder and then gripping is with the head. This causes the tissues in your neck to compress which can lead to reduced blood flow. Over time this can cause significant discomfort and potentially even greater medical issues. By using a telephone headset, a correct posture can be maintained and neck and shoulder pain avoided.
